Have you ever considered or estimated how much of those extra or pocket-money that you have gotten from family-friends, relatives or even your parents that you spent this year, justifiably or otherwise, One, Two, Ten thousand, or even more than that? Some of us are fortunate to have people who would not visit us except that they drop something for us. Have you ever considered saving those extra incomes that you make? The dictionary meaning of saving is to set something aside, keep it back, or protect it so that it can be used later.
It can also be defined as the act of avoiding the wastage of something or using something unnecessarily. There are several things that you can do with those extra incomes that you make. You can buy for yourself things ranging from books, clothing materials, shoes etc. If you can endure to save enough money over a long period, you can even acquire more tangible and lasting things such as a landed property! Are you surprised? Don’t be! Progress comes in small but constant steps!
How to start First, you have to learn to be disciplined. Stop looking at what your peers or people of your age have at the moment. If you do that, you will only end up copying them, thereby making it difficult for you to have any savings at all.
You may have a small safe in your house wherein you will keep those money as they come in or better-still, you may open an account with it. This is better because it will not give you free access to it. You may make it a duty upon yourself to save certain amount of money per day or week. Try to stick to this objective of yours and don’t let anything distract you from doing so.
Advantages of starting now!
You may think that it is too early to start saving but the truth is that, it is what you get yourself accustomed to that will eventually become part of you when you eventually need to it. As we have stated earlier it gives you the opportunity to buy things for yourself whatever you want for yourself. It earns you respect from your peers as well as your relatives because it will mean that you don’t have to start asking for everything from your parents each time you are in need. It trains you to have a sense of responsibility. i.e. it makes you realise the fact that you will sooner or later have to take control of your own affairs.
