Phrasal And prepositional Verbs Throwaway

Wrong: I gave him the letter, but he threw away it.

Correct: I gave him the letter, but he threw it away Back wrongly used after return, recover

Wrong: Dawud went to Kaduna yesterday, but he returned back this morning

Correct: Dawud went to Kaduna yesterday, but he returned this morning or came back this morning. Return means come back, so back is redundant.

Wrong: Abdur Razzaq had invested a lot of money, but he recovered none of it back.

Correct: Abdur Razzaq had invested a lot of money, but he recovered none of it, or he got none of it back. Recover in this example means get back, so back is redundant Up

wrongly used after cope Wrong: He was unable to cope up with so many demands.

Correct: He was unable to cope with so many demands. Cope is not followed by up Up wrongly used after wash

Wrong: He was covered with cement and went to wash up

Correct: He was covered with cement and went to have his bath or to have a wash. Wash up is never used for washing the body. It is used for washing of plates, etc, after a meal: She likes to wash up immediately after eating. Out wrongly used after voice

Wrong: He didn’t want to voice out his opinion.

Correct: He didn’t want to voice his opinion. Up

wrongly omitted after pick Wrong: The teacher came at four O clock to pick him.

Correct: The teacher came at four O clock to pick him up. There is an ordinary verb pick and a phrase verb pick up; pick up is needed here, meaning collecting his car.
