Anger is one of the things that are natural to human beings. This is because we are not the only one on earth and because we have to relate with people who are different from us in terms of their background, temper etc. Surely, offend and disagree with ourselves. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not fail to tell us what to do when this happens to us. Let us see some of the etiquette that we are supposed to observe when anger comes.
Anger is a kind of minor insanity and it is the handiwork of Shaitan. So, when you become angry, the first thing that you should do is to seek refuge with Allaah from Shaitan the accursed by saying; A udhu billahi minash shaitaanir rajeem. "I seek refuge with Allaah from Shaitaan the accursed" (Bukhaari)
Narrated Sulaiman bin Surd: While I was sitting in the company of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), two men abused each other and the face of one of them became red with anger, and his jugular veins swelled (i.e. he became furious). On that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "I know a word, the saying of which will cause him to relax, if he does say it. If he says: I seek refuge with Allaah from Satan, then all his anger will go away" Somebody said to him, "The Prophet has said, Seek refuge with Allaah from Shaitaan. "The angry man said, "Am I mad?" (Bukhaari)
Always say good words. One of the things that make people get angry with each other is when they utter bad words to each other. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) "Who believes in Allaah and the Last Day should say what is good or keep quiet." (Le. abstain from dirty and evil talk, and should think before uttering). (Bukhari) Allaah says;
"And say to My slaves that they should (only) say those words that are the best. (Because) Shaitaan verily, sows a state of conflict and disagreements among them. Surely, he is to man a plain enemy. (Q17:53)
It is common that when people quarrel they say a lot of things that they are not supposed to say, such as insult and abuse. One person may even reveal the secret of the other in anger. This is wrong because when you eventually settle the quarrel it will be impossible for you to take back all that you have said. The best to do when one is angry is to be quiet. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"... and cursing a believer is like murdering him" (Bukhaari)
