THE WRONGLY USED
Errors usually occur where the infinite article is concerned; this is because must, if not all nous must be preceded by the definite article and at some other times must not be. When making the choice between using and not using the definite article, it is important to understand the fact that a particular noun can either refer to one specific or particular object (specific reference], or to all objects in the set which the noun refers to (generic reference]. The definite article is used with uncountable nouns having specific reference; it is not used before uncountable nouns having generic reference.
Let us look at some examples;
Transport.
Wrong: We are neglecting the railways, and spending too much money on the road transport.
Correct: We are neglecting the railways, and spending too much money on road transport.
Society.
Wrong: The society disapproves of those who do not respect its tradition.
Correct: Society disapproves of those who do not respect its tradition. The can however can be used with Society when it has a capital S and means a professional body or club, etc.
Defence.
Wrong: The country spent too much money on the defence.
Correct: The country spent too much money on defence.
School.
Wrong: Everybody now accepts that children should go to the school.
Correct: Everybody now accepts that children should go to school.
University.
Wrong: Abdullah wants to go the university after he leaves school.
Correct: Abdullah wants to go university after he leaves school. If there is only one university in the country in question, university could be written with a capital U, and Abdullah wants to go to the University would be correct.
Geography.
Wrong: We are now studying the West African geography.
Correct: We are now studying West African geography.
